Blog for yourself

10th February 2025

NB: This blog post is inspired by a post from artemis. Go read it now!

Yes, I really mean it. Blog for yourself and only yourself. Don’t blog because you want to be as popular/known/whatever as some blog you might like. Don’t blog because you want to show off to potential future employers.

Instead, write posts because you feel happy while you write them. Because writing is fun to you. Maybe because you learned something new and want to write it down anyways - like e.g. foosel does.

In my experience, the best things come to life because you are actually intrinsically motivated to do something.

You noticed a bug in a piece of software you use? Look at the source code and try to fix it. Or if it is closed source, maybe use this opportunity to finally learn Ghidra and gdb.

Often, this leads to unexpected rabbit holes and suddenly you’re in knee deep.

Even Gronkh, probably the best known german youtuber recently said that he began uploading vidoes just because he wanted to play games more often and to practice talking. Not because he wanted to become some sort of big YouTuber right from the start.

On a darker note, this is also one of my griefs with our society. Many are wasting half of their time in which they are awake in a dayjob they don’t like. Isn’t that beyond ridicoulous? And often times, when I express my anger about this, the response I get is along the lines of “Oh but you can’t just live you whole life on the beach relaxing”. That’s totally missing my point! It’s just that I cannot imagine for the love of the flying sphaghetti monster, to work 40 years in a job where I slowly waste away.

Luckily, I’m still in University and I’m positive, that I can find work, that really satisfies me.

Now I’ve got a bit sidetracked, but I’ll keep this nonetheless - because if this isn’t the best example of blogging for myself, I don’t know what is.

And on a related note - stop wasting your time.
